Je me souviens
Let this little corner of the blogosphere pay thanks and remember men and women who have fallen in battle in Afghanistan since 2001. You were all pretty much younger than me and that alone has me scratching my head. In my priveleged little world I fret about things like flying over Lake Superior on a cloudy day - flying over the Pacific? Never. And yet that is a trivial, laughable fear compared to the daily threat we put you up against.
Braver, stronger, better than me. That's what you have been and that's what your fellow soldiers, still there, still struggling against an irregular evil are to this day.
I am one of those stupid suckers; a naive fool without the beret or Sartre volumes tucked under my arm: 9/11 wasn't obvious to me. 9/11 wasn't the logical culmination of a series of western - American - wrongs. 9/11 wasn't justifiable and had no root causes that could make me shrug my shoulders and admit there was a point. No. It was undiluted insanity; horrific profanity. Its originators are guilty of the most brutal perversions.
It remains the singular vision of evil in my pampered life. I am incapable of imagining worse - and if I never do see worse, it will be only because of your efforts and sacrifice.

Your fire , has enabled us
to have a relevant , and reciprocal ,
fire ...
Ladies and Gentlemen ,
Thank You .
You know who You are ...
And so do we ...

To any Forces folks out there , checking out this stream, I offer the following wistful dream::
First star rising ,
makes me dream .
Love is best ,
with Peaches and Cream ...
See ya soon .

chucker:
Sadly, they are not only younger than you, they are younger than me.
Thank God, they are braver than us both.

The fire diminishes , as it relegates , from its sphere...
My love for you , has never been so dear...
A million miles , is a trace of subtle fear;
A thought of you , is a moment oh so dear...

Anon — You've already received marching orders from another anonymous poster, so far be it for me to intrude on that chain of command.
Can someone explain me why all these sure as shootin big time Liberals like Red Tory absolutely refuse to admit it? It's like talking to the Canadian media.
I believe Red Tory means to say that there is no such distinction between regular and irregular evils. That all evil is irregular, or, all evils are regular. Or, most likely, there is no such thing as evil.
As if a husband beating his wife is not a regular evil.
That such a case is not evil. Because the word evil really shouldn't exist. Everything, you see, to a Liberal, is a disability. Wife beating is a disability. And each disability has a cure - a lovely little pill that performs chemical lobotomies on people.
No, to Liberals, if there is evil at all, it begins and ends with our own militaries.
Am I mis-stating anything here, Red?

If you don't actually understand the dark side of human nature, you end up being a victim of it. That's why conservatives end up getting shafted so often.
Chucker, it's not necessary to believe in good and evil to properly analyse why people do bad things, and to make sure conditions exist so that they can't do those things, or that the harm they end up doing is contained.
That's what liberals believe. If you can't understand that, well...then you're amoral.

It not semantics, Chucker. "Evil" is an abstract concept, one humanity has debated since recorded time. "Bad things" are concrete events that happen in the real world.
It is useful and productive to distinguish between the two.

when the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie that's, amoral!
Oh, and...heh. You're still the only connie that makes me titter.

okay. I can buy that distinction. I'd say only that I wouldn't discard the word "evil" only because it has been monopolized by religious fundamentalists of all religions to brand behaviour they don't approve of. Call it the Stephen King brand of evil. In his books, there's regular evils of daily living, like, as I said earlier, wife beating, child beating, bullying, etc. And there's irregular evil - which, in his fiction - is always supernatural. But, in our experiences, we can see irregular evils - evils of mind-boggling scope - in our history and currently.
The Beslan tragedy is a good example of what I would call an irregular evil. So is Darfur. So was Rwanda. Its hard for me to use the word "bad" for these events.

You do know that Stephen King was a raging alcoholic when he wrote most of his stuff, right?
With regard to "evil;"...well, think about that the next time you accuse others of degeneracy, or sit silently when one of your clan does.

It doesn't matter what term people use to describe events that have nothing to do with them.

The Red Tory clan are just about the most irritating and insular bunch of bigots one could possibly imagine. Feel their pain.
"It doesn't matter what term people use to describe events that have nothing to do with them."
phew, no more worrying about whether something is a genocide or not!
Let the rest of the planet rot! Hooray!

I'm crossing my fingers...when we finally get to rounding up "conservatives" and interning them in death camps, I'd prefer not to be confronted with any moral dilemmas. It'll ruin my day, that's for sure.
See, Chucker? Your brethren are always so quick to accuse their adversaries of moral degeneracy.
Projection, no doubt about it...

Surely a fine example of "neocon" paranoia. The same kind of paranoia that saw a Third World country in the Middle East hurling nuclear missiles at a sleeping Europe, about to disappear under a mushroom cloud in a matter of minutes.
The facts are that "neocons" are as dead as Jerry Falwell's corpse. And as brain dead as an Ayn Rand novel about "morality".
