Irwin Cotler, Tom Wappel - We will Not Forget
Today is a victory for the Liberal party. They successfully gutted anti-terrorist measures and made Canada the most terrorist-friendly nation around. Its a huge victory for civil liberties - except the right not to be blown up or beheaded or regrettable fodder for some good ol' fashion freedom fighting for a far-flung cause. Not that I give a shit about that - I didn't know anyone on that Air India flight and no one in my family had to jump from the World Trade Center to escape the infernal heat that a jet-fuelled fire created. Besides, like many of you, I'm fed up with the victim's families playing the victim card --- have they ever thought about the root causes of such acts of madness? Trust me, if they did, they would see themselves and their selfish, imperialist pig-dog lifestyles.
The National Post's Jonathan Kay had quite a dizzy column casting spurious allegations about how the Liberal party could have folded over itself to arrive at this Martin Luther King-esque defense of our civil liberties. Annoyingly, he catalogues the litany of perverse horse-trading that took place during the Liberal convention and well before, relying on Tarek Fateh and a Liberal source to confirm what everyone suspects but most of the media buries deep in the fissures of this nation. As the valley girl in me would say, "like whatever!" So what if Bob Rae's wife was attacked for being an unashamed Jew --- its not like she isn't an unashamed Jew. Besides, if the Saudi-funded Jimmy Carter calls Israeli practices "apartheid" then that's what they are.
The worst of his allegations, to my mind, is calling Gerard Kennedy an empty vessel that drew ethnic politickers who saw a lump of clay primed for them to mold. Gerard Kennedy is not an empty vessel - he has a bold vision for the country. Remember, he wanted to make Canada the "first International Nation". You know, the kind of country that has no national interest and cedes its foreign policy to a hundred little lobby groups who, as Paul Martin would say with some admiration, "know how to defend themselves".
Shame! Shame! The Liberals said to Stephen Harper last week - and plenty of good folks, otherwise sober and mostly serious - chimed in agreement. And it is his great shame that he should try to wake his nation up; let them know that their parliament is real and not some high school model; that we were attacked on 9/11. The sound of a worried Prime Minister will not wake Canada up to the sinister rot that infests our political thinking. The only sound that will do that is "boom".
ps. Garth Turner - I wouldn't lube my bicycle with you.

When Dion was first selected as Grand Librano Poobah, even though he did not impress me personally, I thought that he would be tough adversary for the Tories.
In the end, he is as dogmatic an ideologue as any Dipper could ever be. The actions of him and the Librano$ will frighten many if not most of the centralist voters to the Tories.
All the Tories need now is a fair and balanced mass media outfit to point these actions out to Canadians!

Funny, for all the Harper's scary meme, we heard about over the last two years,
Harper's turned out to be the quintessential centralist,
and the Libs went and picked as their leader a radical left wing freak.

Well done, Chucker.
I have new respect for Cotler and Wappel.
I too thought that Dion would be a worthy opponent for Harper. I thought he possessed integrity. I was so wrong.
He is beneath contempt.

Well, wtf. You all know I was delighted with Dion's win of the leadership. I'm really surprised at his performance, and as of this week, I'm done with him.
I'm sure there will be many Liberals, leaders and local candidates, that I will support in the future. Dion is dead to me.
I'd like to add something here, but I can't think of much after your post. By the way, "it's not like she isn't an unashamed Jew" is almost enough to crack a smile on me, and right now, that's a pretty impressive feat.
I just want to say: delighted as I was with Dion, I said earlier that Rae was the only real, true "leader" in the whole pack. Man, what a screw-up that he was knocked out of the balloting. It'd be better for Canada and competitive democracy if he were in charge.

Well, at least the Libs are consistent.
First they're busting their butts to gut legislation that gets tough on criminals (as opposed to duck hunters)...
Now they've gutted the anti-terrorism tools of our security agencies.
And they're bitching to high hell about the audacity of the CPC to put...grab yourself by the gonads because this is shocking stuff...actual police force representatives on panels that select our courts judges. No kidding!!!
Fuck it! Who needs Layton and the Dippers any more, eh? They're now officially obsolete. The Liberals are every bit, if not more, the de facto loony lefties of Canadian politics.
The temptation for Harper to hold an election soon as possible must be fucking grinding every minute of the day.
The only plus in waiting a while is that Dion and his collection of bozos are hell bent to dig themselves an ever deeper pit of no return with each passing day.

Jason Bo Green,
100% agreed. Bob Rae has been completely renovated by the obscene things that happened today. He really is a man of principle. While I could never vote for him since I believe Stephen Harper is the greatest Prime Minister this country has ever had, I would not be upset with Bob Rae as Prime Minister one day. Even if he bankrupts the country - some things are more important than cash.

Okay, I just read that linked article.
What I said before: Bob Rae.
To be honest, I recognized AdScam was "bad", but I never really was that worked up. Yes, the mis-doers deserved punishment, but in the end, in the big, global picture, I wasn't losing sleep - politicians steal, get used to it.
This is turning out to be, I believe, the most alarming scandal I've ever known in Canada. I hope it turns out untrue, but it certainly doesn't seem that way at present.

Springer,
There has to be an election. Now. (Or post March 26th). Its more than winning - our country is now at risk with a communist cabal calling the shots in parliament. We have no choice.
Harper has to take the risk for the good of Canada. Admit it: you know that's the case. Fuck minority/majority/electoral considerations and do what's right for the country: get rid of that slime ball mofo tout de suite.

Sorry Chucker, just seeing that now - agreed, some things are indeed more important than cash.
You know, it was his being the only one out of the bunch to stand up and say, "Um, no..." to Ignatieff's warcrimes accusation that made me zero in on him.
Little did I know at the time.

Adscam gets me steamed, Jason, because it was a plot to kill off the Conservatives. It almost worked had it not been for the good fortune of having Canada's Churchill pop up in a time of great need. Not physical need, I grant you - the country is booming. Even here in Montreal, the country is booming.
But there is a psychic/philosophical/spiritual problem that needs serious correcting and Stephen Harper is the cure.
Yes, what he did last week seemed ugly --- but if you knew what he likely knows, and we will likely know soon enough, I don't think anyone will do anything but cheer him on.
Shame my big fat white hairy ass.

And, just seeing that one - yeah, agreed. Let's go to the polls. The sooner Dion loses and is replaced the better.
fucking right. I'm so pissed.
as I said to Deaner earlier today: there's even a love story that is extremely endearing in the Bob Rae story. Asked who he endorses at the end of the day: his wife. His love.
Bob Rae will be almost as big a hero as Stephen Harper.
Personally, and Herb can back me up should he come this way, I have always like Bob Rae as a person. I think he's funny.

Sheena,
off-topic but I just saw the 1st half of "Last King of Scotland".
This has to be the most unbelieveably amazing movie made in years. And Forest Whittaker is a frikkin' genius.

Harper knows alright. At the time "it didn't add up". Why would he personally raise it? He's so politcially shrewd, why the misstep?
Well now wer're seeing why.
This will be immense politically.

Whoops, just seeing that one now -- I do feel, prolly will always, Harper went about it in the wrong way, but I've said the whole time: it's a very legitimate question about serious conflict of interest, no doubt.
Jason,
when the dust settles (and I recall you saying the same thing over at Grit in different words):
no one will give a flying shit how Harper said it.
obviously - he had to say it in Question Period (to avoid legal issues) and he had to say it. Absolutely.
At the time, I wasn't thrilled by it. But now, I am not thrilled with those who leapt to Liberal defenses saying "how ridiculous to insinuate...." (Olaf, I love you man, but I'm looking at YOU).

Yes, I did say that, and I still believe it - agreed.
he had to say it in Question Period (to avoid legal issues)
Oh? What legal issues?
Maybe he was more justified than I first imagined - I thought it would be more appropriate to present the question out of the House entirely. Do tell.

Chucker is actually understating the effect of Harper's statement. In hindsight he will be viewed as a true leader who tried to speak out against the back lash.
And the Liberals calls for pity will be veiwed like the wretched man who murdered his parents, pleading to the court for mercy on the grounds that he was an orphan.

Brilliant post CC.
The Liberals have shown they are scum in the lowest possible way.
I agree on all points, even Bob Rae. He really impressed me on Duffy today.
If that is the man that the Cons lose to in the future, so be it.
I'd like to toot my own horn in how I said, minute one, that Harper stood up to wave that article because that's the only way this story would ever break.

MolarMauler,
everyone at this site knows you are the smartest pyjama pundit in the business who sees infra-red where we can only see lame colours.

Jason,
if he says it in Question Period, he can't be sued for Libel - "parliamentary privelege" is what its called I think. MPs can say anything in HoC and not get sued for it.
Also, Molarmauler has it just right I think: without making the story about what a shit-head Harper is, we would never hear about this story.
My Molarmauler-esque prediction: the second big scandal from this will be about our 5th estate. Toodle over to Paul Wells - glib and pithy even if a little squeamish. Quelle surprise.

Thanks, Chuck. I didn't want to completely fly off the handle!
I dunno, but maybe if we had a real media outlet in this country, instead of the current ones that portray Liberal talking points as news, I'd be a little bit more positive about the prospects of a Tory majority.
Whether it's stories about the Tories "stacking judicial selection committees" (like the Liberals NEVER did [/sarcasm]) or a story I saw last night on Global BC about how we are now supposed to be in some kind of day care crisis, I can't even watch the news anymore. I swear, all they do is read Liberal press releases all night! Always challenging the Tories' positions, never questioning the Liberals/leftits'.
What makes this even scarier is that the Liberals are going to the left of the NDP, into Marxist extremist territory. They aren't even pretending to be pragmatic centralists like they used to portray themselves as.
CBC must be broken up and privatised, and the media concentration must be shattered!
Fuck, I'm mad!

Okay, I'm going to have to re-evaluate my entire take on Harper's approach to this matter.
Maybe his fashion in addressing it was the best way, after all.

You know, MM, I was just thinking - this is worse than Watergate. Isn't it? I'm foggy on the details, but it seems to pale to this.
That's quite an astounding article!!!
And ditto what Splendor said. The MSM in this country is more rabidly Liberal/Leftwing now than ever. I'm about to the point that I can't even be bothered to turn on the TV for news any more. The Libs are getting away with just utter crap, and the CBC has made it their corporate mission to wrap all of it roses and perfume and sell it every fucking night. If Keith Boag frowned any more every time he mentioned Harper, his GD jaw would lock up! These guys aren't even remotely subtle about it, either.
Anyway...
I'll take one Harper over a truck load of Raes every time.

You forgot to mention the 23 MPs that didn't show up to vote. Keith Martin was one, I guess we'll have to see tomorrow's Hansard to find out who else stayed home.
Mind you, if Cotler & Wappel & the other 23 had voted, it would have been a tie and Milliken would have had to vote with the Gov't (as that's expected of the Speaker). So I'd hesitate to call them heroes, but at least they took a (small) stand. What, is Dion going to toss them ALL out?

Getting in late to this news, but riddle me this. With all the allocades Bobbo is getting in this thread, HOW did he vote? I don't think he voted for the bill (haven't read details yet), was he one of the absentees?
In any case, IF he had cojones he would have been there voting against limp-dick-dion and to hell with the consequences..

To all the bloggers out there,
and Candace that means you too,
That National Post revelation should be at the top of every friggin blog.
We can't complain about the media if we don't even have it up.
This IS bigger than Adscam. I also think US news should be informed as it has international implications. I'd love to see the liberal Canadian press scooped by Fox.
On with it, get the message out!

And here comes the media dishonesty.
The anti terror measure is now described as "controversial".
Two weeks ago we were in line (actually somewhat weaker, see Stephen Taylor's site) with other western countries on this legislation,
but suddenly its ominously "controversial".
The Lib media in this country is simply pathetic.
They just follow the Lib party line, right down the middle, regardless of how dishonest.

Chucker,
Remember that Aislin cartoon of René Lévesque with his pants down?
As the dead man said: "Everybody, take a valium". We will need it after the latest Angus Reid poll.
Respectfully, I think you are dead wrong. This whole thing is a royal mess for us. I've pontificated as much on my blog.

This latest move cements the new Liberal motto: when in doubt, outflank Jack. I'm severely disappointed in Dion, and said as much over at my own place.
The Libs, under Dion, are seeking to shift Canada's political spectrum so that the left becomes the centre and pragmatic thinking such as that of Harper becomes "far right." They seem hell-bent on socially engineering everything else to their favour, why should this surprise us?
Needless to say, I think they've made a mistake by taking an option off the table. It's the option of last resort, hence why it's never been used to this point, but then again so are the airbags in my hypothetical car.

Just called and roasted the local Liberal MP. Felt great! The Liberal Party and the media are beyond contempt. Shame!
Harper is a fascists!
Three opposition parties voted last night to kill two extraordinary police anti-terror investigative powers, not just the libs.
Existing Criminal Code provisions already very clearly allows for the arrest of individuals who are suspected of being about to commit an offence, including offences related to terrorist activity.
"These two provisions especially have done nothing to fight against terrorism, have not been helpful and have continued to create some risk for civil liberties," Dion said.
Amen friends of liberty Dion, Layton and Gilles Duceppe!

So is Irwin Cotler and Bob Rae and Anne Mclellan and John Manley and the Supreme Court of Canada (hear that Rosie Abela!). The RCMP are fascists; even though their shirts are red and not brown they aren't fooling us!
The families of 911 are fascists as are the families of the Air India Bombing. A large portion of the Liberal caucas who were whipped by Dion are fascists.

If you can't see this is all about Liberal partisan politics, with Canadian security coming a poor second to Dion's leadership, then I can only think your parents being siblings have something to do with it.

Existing Criminal Code provisions already very clearly allows for the arrest of individuals who are suspected of being about to commit an offence, including offences related to terrorist activity.

Jaco,
I'd rather be a facist than what you are:
a self-loathing terrorist sympathizer.
You are not on the side of western civilization. You are not on the side of humanity. You are on the side of a death cult. You are John Cave of Gore Vidal's Messiah.
A nice guy? Sure. Do you deliberately mean evil? I don't think so.
But you are supporting evil.

It has now been discovered that BBC 24 also reported the Building 7 collapse before it fell. Furthermore, CNN’s Aaron Brown reported that Building 7 "has collapsed or is collapsing" over an hour before it fell.
"OTTAWA – Federal political parties that ignore the concerns of Canada’s Muslim and Arab communities over security and human rights risk paying a political price, a coalition of Quebec groups warned yesterday.
Speaking to reporters during a day spent lobbying members of Parliament, the coalition said that Muslim and Arab voters can influence the results of elections in an estimated 50 ridings.
“There are a million Arabs and Muslims in Canada according to the latest statistics,” said Faraj Nakhleh, chairman of the Canadian Palestinian Foundation of Quebec. “Like any group they have certain synergies and they affected the outcome of some of the elections last year.”
In the January 2006 vote, Muslim and Arab voters upset about the way Prime Minister Paul Martin’s government was handling anti-terrorism issues and growing prejudice against their communities transferred their votes from the Liberals to the Bloc Québécois, Nakhleh said. The result, he said, was that the Liberals lost a number of ridings in the Montreal area including Pierre Pettigrew’s riding of Papineau, Liza Frulla’s in Jeanne LeBer, Eleni Bakopanos in Ahuntsic and Jacques Saada in Brossard-Laprairie
“In Brossard Jacques Saada was defeated by the Bloc and it is thanks to the Arab vote,” Nakhleh said. He suggested Prime Minister Stephen Harper is also making his own electoral calculations. “It is obvious to us that the government of Canada has switched to pro-Israeli.”
He was distinguished for ignorance; for he had only one idea and that was wrong.

You see Jaco, the Liberals are looking at a Kim Campbell like result in the next election. Hence, protection of their Quebec- based Montreal rump requires a leader from Quebec who will do whatever pandering it takes to ensure the Liberal party remains in existence.

Bob Rae is no hero. It's easy to take a contrarian position to your party leader when you don't vote. Does anyone think for a second that Ignatieff was not for renewing the ATA? He couldn't take that position without causing a schism in the party. He's in a position where he needs to pick his battles (much like Rae would be if he were in the House).
The interesting thing about Dion's stance is that he's gained nothing and lost alot. I doubt he's picked up any new supporters and he's portrayed himself as an ideological civil liberties freak. He's totally abandoned national security to the Tories and given the Ignatieff and Rae supporters ample reason to go sharpen their knives. What an idiot!

I'm sure if they polled white Christian Canadians and ask the same question the percentage would have been higher, or does that mean only Muslims/Arabs can be terrorists?

"But, two, if the measures are not the threat to civil liberties some make out -- they are in fact quite mild, by international standards -- neither does yesterday's vote spell their permanent extinction. It is always open to the government to reintroduce legislation granting the same authority, as no doubt it will do shortly enough, the better to depict the Liberals as feckless pantywaists."
That's from Andrew Coyne in the NP today.
Wonder if the Liberals will threaten him with a libel lawsuit for calling them "feckless pantywaists". Nahh. That will never happen. Truth is an absolute defense against libel.

The anti-terrorism measures allowed police to arrest suspects without a warrant and detain them for 72 hours without charges, provided police believe a terrorist act may be committed.
according to our existing Criminal Code provisions already in place, police can arrest suspects without a warrant and detain them for 24 hours without charges, and I believe they can ask a judge for another 24 extension if need be.

Jacobin, Dion did not kill the bill because of "preventative arrest" as much as he likes to say so. It was to appease members of his caucus and delegates from the convention regarding "investigative hearings".
And "investigative hearings" are what the Air India families were calling for preserving.

"They have not been helpful and have continued to create some risk for civil liberties."
Amnesty International calls on the House of Commons not to renew the powers under sections 83.28 and 83.3 of the Criminal Code.

"are you saying all Muslims/Arabs are terrorist?"
No. I'm saying that the Liberal party will do anything to retain it's existence. Which may boil down to a half dozen seats in Montreal. These seats have a Muslim factor. As noted above the Liberals were warned.Toe the Muslim line or lose votes.Killing the terrorist provisions are, I'm sure, just the latest constituentcy requirement. Luckily for us, their constituentcy is getting smaller and smaller.

Neither the NDP(a protest party) or the Bloc (seperatists) have any credibility to me. They serve a purpose but it isn't good governance. Of course with the Liberals strong left turn lately, they seem to fit quite well on your side of the spectrum, the kooky side.

But only one of those three parties flip-flopped and the other two don't count because one could never form the goverment and if the other did we're all doomed anyway.

Jaco:
What's your point? ALL politicians on the left are dishonest, opportunistic genetically disadvantaged miscreants? Much like their camp followers? I would have to say I lean more to the born stupid greatly increasing their birthright descriptive, but close enough.

Sigh, you can include the Greens in that side of the spectrum against the "heavy-handed" anti-terror measures. As if Ms. May's approach to NAFTA isn't heavy handed.

"...police can arrest suspects without a warrant and detain them for 24 hours without charges, and I believe they can ask a judge for another 24 extension if need be."
The only "warrantless arrest" provisions (other than those which will expire on the ATA sunset clause) are only available to a peace officer in relation to an individual who "...has committed an indictable offence or who, on reasonable grounds, he believes has committed or is about to commit an indictable offence" (Sec 495). The issue is whether that is sufficient in a case where the expected offense will be the commission of an act of terrorism - one problem is that "about to commit" is time-indeterminate: does that mean in the next minute, hour, or month? As well, the notion of "about to commit" is a little fuzy in relation to planning such an attack.
Perhaps you are thinking of other provisions - I await your citation.

But Deaner,
still: the section you quote, according to Liberal logic is an assault on civil liberties.
in fact, every cop show I've ever seen where the suspect is in an interview room and the cops say, over bad coffee, "we gotta let the mofo go..." --- is an example of an assault on civil liberties.
The Liberal party can't let the section you quoted stand. They must act to eliminate it ASAP.

The problem, jaco, is whether you can be "about to commit" conspiracy - which is why the (soon to be gone) section 83.3(4) allows an arrest if the peace officer believes it to be necessary "to prevent" an act of terrorism, rather than when someone is about to commit an indictable offense. In both cases the continued detention must be confirmed by a Judge within 24 hours or, (IIRC) as soon as possible if no Judge is available within 24 hours.
Personally, I don't find that to be an unwarrented infringement on my personal freedoms - and the right of habeas corpus is not affected other than for that 24 hour period. As noted, we already tolerate that degree of infringement if we are deaing with an ordinary criminal act - say theft or assault: given the nature or terrorist activity, I think the (very slightly) lower standard of proof is warranted.
